29 Jul Grand Openings: Brand New Black-owned Restaurants in the U.S. – July 2021
Candy Shack Daiquiris – Missouri City, TX
Candy Shack Daiquiris has been dubbed “the internet’s favorite daiquiri.” They’re known for their candy toppings and Instagram-worthy “party cups,” but they also serve nice bites to go with the New Orleans-style drink. They have catfish, shrimp, chicken, eggrolls and Mexican-style street corn. Check out their new location on 6850 Hwy. 6, Ste. 700 in Missouri City.
PeeWee’s CrabCakes – New Orleans, LA
PeeWee’s CrabCakes has just opened its third location in New Orleans, with plans to open another in Kenner, LA and Hewitt, TX. They’re expanding so fast because people love how inventive they are when it comes to creating delicious crab-based dishes, from deviled eggs topped with crab cakes on top, to the crab cake tacos and deep-fried seafood stuffed potato. But they also have non crab-based dishes, like the hHennessy bourbon chicken and waffles.
Sweet Grass Market – Dallas, TX
The all new Sweet Grass Market is an upscale convenience store with a Cajun kitchen, coffee bar, lounge, and more. It’s a place for patrons to “shop, eat, and chill.” Try the crawfish etouffee in the evening or the caramel frappe with a warm blueberry muffin for breakfast. On boiled seafood Saturdays, the crawfish, crab, shrimp, and turkey neck plates come with their special Cajun butter sauce.
Black Coffee lounge – Cincinnati, OH
More than a coffee shop, Black Coffee Lounge is a “culture” shop. Surrounded by what they call a “brilliant community,” they are often partnering up with other organizations to show the best of what Cincinnati has to offer. This attracted the attention of Vice President Kamala Harris, who had the Woke • Anda house blend (now available for purchase on the website) when visiting. Black Coffee Lounge recently had its grand re-opening.
KB’s Hot Chicken – Sugar Land, TX
KB’s Hot Chicken is offering up Nashville-style Halal hot chicken and other smoked meats. They opened in May with their daily quarter bird lunch special and with creative brisket dishes like the brisket po’ boy, brisket mac stack, and brisket loaded fries. Their chicken comes in 6 heat levels, ranging from “Southern Heat” to “Blazin”. Try to catch them on one of the days they offer their high requested breakfast items, including chicken and waffles, hot chicken biscuits, and honey butter chicken biscuits.
Jus’ a Cup – Sanger, TX
Those who follow Jus A Cup on Instagram have seen the team’s journey to opening up Sanger, TX’s brand-new Black woman-owned coffee shop. They have truly transformed the space into what they hope will be a community-minded business. Since their grand opening they’ve already hosted a meet-and-greet for local high school students and their principal, as well as a storytelling time for kids. They also unveil a new mystery flavor of coffee every Friday.
Burns Original BBQ – Houston, TX
Burns Original BBQ is not only a local staple, it was a favorite of the late, great Anthony Bourdain. He called it “some of the best East Texas style BBQ you can find.” They have already expanded to selling their sauces, rubs, and BBQ chips in stores, and now they’ve just opened a BBQ Bistro inside Kroger. They’ve also recently added a food truck to their portfolio.
Topey’s Kitchen – Detroit, MI
Topey’s Kitchen invites you to “celebrate your senses” by trying their international-inspired menu. They’re serving up flavors from the Caribbean, like festival and coco bread, as well as dishes from American, Italian, and Mexican cuisines. Try one of their Reggae-style sandwiches, quesadillas, and pastas.
The all new Kiss Houston calls itself a “vibe” dining experience. Brought to you by the folks behind Clé and Spire, they recently launched their grown & sexy brunch with dishes like the braised beef sliders with pulled short rib, zesty slaw, pickled green tomato, and cognac barbecue. Be sure to make reservation before pulling up at their Sawyer Yards location.
Daiqs – Houston, TX
DaiqsHTX is serving up “grown vibes” at their 90s- and 80s-style brunches. The walls are lined with music-themed art, including life-size paintings of Beyonce, Prince, Marvin Gaye, and Houston’s own Tobe & Fats. You’ll want to check out their chicken & waffles along with one of their signature brunch cocktails. And be sure to follow them on Instagram to catch the next time they offer their complimentary mimosas.
