African-Restaurant

By Jazzmine Woodard (@dashofjazzblog)

Houston’s culinary scene is one of the richest in the nation, with the number of Black-owned restaurants rivaling that of any big city. As a native Houstonian and Nigerian-American, I am especially familiar with the city’s Motherland eateries, and have narrowed down a hot list of five African restaurants to try in Houston during Black Restaurant Week and beyond. Check out this list, make your reservations, and get ready to enjoy!

For a taste of flavors that touch many parts of West Africa, ChopnBlok should be one of your first stops. This fast-casual African fusion restaurant in downtown Houston presents Western-friendly takes on traditional foods from Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon, and more. And while Houston’s African eateries have largely been located in residential and suburban areas, ChopnBlok is located in the heart of the city for the convenience of visitors and city dwellers alike.

For East African fare in Houston, stop by Blue Nile. This authentic Ethiopian restaurant has been around since 1994 and was the first of its kind in the city. Blue Nile serves classic dishes from The Motherland including extensive vegetarian options. And yes, they have injera!

Go for: Save room and time after your meal for the Ethiopian coffee ceremony, which is not to be missed.

When it comes to African street food, suya is one of the most iconic dishes, and Suya Hut specializes in this Nigerian staple. Visit this long-standing suya restaurant in southwest Houston to grab flavorful skewers of meat, seafood, and even vegetables, along with a full menu of Nigerian snacks, small bites, and entrees.

Houston is home to a significant Cameroonian community and Chez Michelle is a beloved eatery that gets the stamp of approval for authenticity. Although it is known as the “House of Fish” Chez Michelle serves the full gamut of proteins, vegetables, and other sides both a la carte and in spicy soups and stews.

With Trinity, it’s the consistency, for me. This West African restaurant in Houston does many foods well and has the expansive menu to prove it. Newcomers to Nigerian cuisine will appreciate the menu item images and descriptions. In addition to dine-in and takeout, Trinity caters. Looking for a menu recommendation? Order the meat pies, fried rice, and vegetables, to start.
