AFRICAN GRILL AND BAR LLC (AGB) stands as a pioneering establishment, proudly representing the first all-African kitchen in the United States. With two inviting dining areas boasting a combined capacity of 200, AGB offers dependable catering services for all occasions, a versatile event room available for rent, and efficient delivery services. It is the only restaurant in the U.S. serving diverse and rich cuisines from every corner of the African continent—West Africa, East Africa, North Africa, South Africa, and Central Africa.
Founded in 2004 by Sylvester and Theodora Osei-Fordwuo, both hailing from Ghana, West Africa, AGB has been shaped by their extensive experience in the African restaurant industry. The journey began in Aurora, Colorado, and has since flourished into a renowned establishment with a strong presence in Lakewood, CO.
Sylvester, born into a family of twelve, discovered his passion for cooking at an early age under his mother’s and six sisters’ guidance. His culinary journey began with the preparation of “fufu,” a staple in Ghanaian cuisine, long before his teenage years. Before relocating to the U.S.A., Sylvester worked as an accountant and auditor in the financial sector. Despite facing homelessness in his first year in the U.S.A., he managed 7-Eleven stores from 2001 to 2004, culminating in the establishment of African Grill and Bar.
Theodora, the first daughter among five siblings, learned the art of cooking early in life due to familial responsibilities while her mother pursued a midwifery degree. In Ghana and Nigeria, Theodora was exposed to the diverse culinary traditions of both nations. Before migrating to the U.S.A., Theodora worked as a business administrator. Faced with the challenges of settling in a new country, Theodora leveraged her culinary talent to support her family, assuming the role of the main chef at AGB since its inception in 2004.
AGB is more than just a restaurant; it is a testament to family strength, with Sylvester and Theodora’s children—Nana, Maame, and Oheneba Osei-Fordwuo—playing integral roles in its success.
Over the years, AGB has garnered recognition and accolades from various organizations, including 7news Hot Food for the Year, Vagan Challenge winner, 5280 Magazine, Westword, West Metro Chamber-Best Taste (1st Place), Yelp, Grubhub, Doordash, and the recipient of the Jeffco Challenger Award.
In keeping with its commitment to making a positive impact, AGB proudly donates a percentage of its food sales to the OSEI-FORDWUO FOUNDATION through the “Donate 4 Africa” program. The “O” FOUNDATION, a non-profit entity, focuses on assisting underprivileged children and women in Africa. In Colorado, AGB extends its support to school cultural programs, churches, clinics, and those in need, embodying a commitment to culinary excellence and community service.
