A major Houston restaurant event is here. Black Restaurant Week starts this Sunday, April 14th and serves up its tempting offerings until April 28th. Get ready for a forkful of African American, African, Caribbean flavors and much more.
The Bayou City’s diverse culture — and chefs — are being spotlighted. This year’s Black Restaurant Week theme is Follow Your Fork, and there’s quite a pathway, thanks to the 30-plus participating restaurants, showcasing everything from barbecue to burgers, Soul food to Cajun, tropical smoothies to seafood. It’s a chance to eat good meals at a discount and perhaps discover restaurants you have not visited before.
Houston’s just one city participating in this appetizing and seriously satisfying fortnight foodie frenzy. Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Philadelphia and Oakland are also holding Black Restaurant Week during this same 14-day span.
The myriad Houston restaurants taking part in this feast include: Alfreda’s Soul Food, The Alley Kat, Ate Kitchen, Boogie’s BBQ, B’s Wine Bar, Burns Burger Shack, Burns Original BBQ, Cafe 4212, Cool Runnings Jamaican Grill and Bar, Dolce, Esther’s Cajun Cafe and Seafood, Esther’s Signature Dish, Etta’s, The French Fry House, Golden Krust Caribbean Restaurant, This Is It Soul Food, Indigo, Krab Kingz Seafood, Culture, Lucille’s, Mikki’s, Neyow’s Creole Cafe, Ogun Art & Wine, OMG Seafood, Phil & Derek’s Jazz Lounge, Poitin, Prospect Park Sports Bar & Kitchen, Ray’s Real Pit BBQ Shack, Reggae Hut Cafe, Soulfood Vegan, Sugar’s Cajun Cuisine & Bar, Sunshine’s Health Food Store and Vegetarian Deli, Taste Bar + Kitchen, Taste of Nigeria, Turkey Leg Hut and Tropical Smoothie Cafe.
Some restaurants are serving meals for Black Restaurant Week all day long, while others are choosing between breakfast, brunch, dinner, lunch and even happy hour.
The menus are all available on Black Restaurant Week’s site, such as Indigo’s brunch with aged dairy biscuits with smoked wild boar gravy and heirloom grits with prawns; Kulture’s happy hour with options that include black-eyed pea fritters and fried okra; Lucille’s lunch with fried green tomatoes and oyster BLTs; and Taste Bar + Kitchen’s dinner with Nashville hot chicken and waffles and deep-fried waffle bread pudding.
And it’s not just tantalizing dishes. There are a host of culinary events scattered throughout the two-week window. Aroma: Culinary Panel Discussion; Art of Flavor: Pop Up Dinner 2019; Nosh: Culinary Showcase 2019; and Soundbites Food Truck Fest 2019 add even more elements to Black Restaurant Week in the Bayou City.
During Black Restaurant Week, you don’t just get a chance to fill your belly. You’ll support the event’s nonprofit partner, F.A.R.M.S., a regional 501c3 that provides legal and technical services to farmers of color in order to prevent the loss of landownership, eradicate hunger in the farmers’ communities and build generational wealth.
